Transportation: Red Light Speed Enforcement

Cameras have been in use a decade or more for enforcing speed limits and red lights, but effectiveness has been limited by the cost and time taken to detect infringements by analyzing video footage. The latest generation of IP-based cameras brings the potential of automatic detection of infringements and even real-time response, for example, by informing a driver of the offense through road side beacons. This, in turn, could improve detection rates, cut the cost of enforcement and reduce accidents. At the same time, the era of IP cameras brings a networking challenge given the large number of devices being deployed across major road networks, making it imperative that the solution is straightforward and inexpensive to deploy and maintain.

Many road networks are already cabled with copper, making this the obvious physical infrastructure, especially now that it can support carrier Ethernet at broadband speeds with like-like performance and availability. The Actelis ML series of Ethernet Access Devices (EADs) can be used to connect such equipment in a hub-and-spoke arrangement.
