Backhaul Solutions: Mobile Backhaul

173.8 million smartphones were sold in 2009, up 15% from 2008, according to Strategy Analytics. During this same period, 1.12 trillion voice minutes were used and 822 billion text messages were sent or received. The proliferation of smartphones, coupled with the growth of wireless voice and data traffic, are fueling demand for backhaul bandwidth at an unprecedented pace. The growth in demand and the need to reach every customer with high-speed services is also driving an explosion in the number of cells, with evolving solutions like picocells and femtocells.

While overall wireless revenue continues to grow, it is accompanied by a distinct decoupling of revenue growth from bandwidth growth (i.e. consumption of bandwidth per customer is growing faster than revenue per customer). This decoupling, along with the expansion in the number of cells—especially with picocell and femtocell deployments—puts immense pressure on a mobile network operator’s ability to manage OPEX. The growth in bandwidth consumptions is forcing the switch from TDM to packet-based networks as traditional E1/T1-based capacity becomes incapable of supporting new bandwidth-hungry applications and services. However, the requirement to support legacy services is not going away, creating an access conundrum.

The need to migrate to a converged packet network and continue supporting legacy TDM services presents several challenges. One challenge is the inability of current packet-based networks to deliver high-quality clock-to-cell sites. The Actelis ML600 series of EADs provides the solution that mobile operators are looking for; a cost-effective solution for high-bandwidth connectivity, efficient transport of both data and circuit traffic while maintaining accurate synchronization required in cellular networks.

Actelis' mobile backhaul portfolio includes pure Ethernet products and solutions that combine Ethernet and E1/T1 ports for 2G, 3G, 3.5G, picocell and femtocell base stations, with up to 100 Mbps of symmetrical bandwidth over existing copper facilities. Actelis' mobile backhaul solution enables integrated delivery of symmetric high-speed carrier Ethernet, TDM services and synchronization over existing copper infrastructure at speeds up to 100 Mbps.

Most operators shy away from a rip-and-replace approach when they migrate from one platform or technology to another. The ability to cost effectively migrate their networks over a period of time without significant impact on their customers and revenue is critical to their ability to evolve their technology. Actelis' solutions allow operators to evolve their networks at their own pace without taking unnecessary risks, addressing that very challenge. The Actelis ML600 series of EADs provides the only cost effective way to deliver backhaul services for any technology, from legacy cellular deployments to emerging picocell and femtocell deployments.
