Dedicated Networks: Government

Government agencies are often having to do more with less, or at least run just to stay still, as budget cutbacks force them to cut staff and resources. Public expectation of services such as law enforcement, pursuit of justice in the courts, along with emergency services, continues to rise, while there is growing pressure for collaboration with other government agencies to share resources for delivery of overall service improvements.

Against this background, both state and local government agencies are turning to technology to deliver their community responsibilities and services. Examples include video surveillance for enforcing traffic regulations, video conferencing for remote court arraignments for less serious offences as well as distance training within the emergency services, and new generations of IP devices for a variety of environmental monitoring applications.

Such applications are generating much more data than government agencies are used to handling, calling for broadband networks to provide sufficient bandwidth and QOS. While fiber and other media such as microwave will play their part, the existing copper infrastructure will carry most of the traffic. This is because many government agencies already have their own private copper network covering their site and often extending into their municipal district, and if not they can utilize existing "dry copper pairs" from their incumbent service provider. They then need a platform to turn the copper on for high bandwidth broadband services that provide fiber-like performance and availability. The Actelis METALight (ML) Ethernet in the First Mile platforms are the best solution, having been designed to deliver rock solid performance across copper, even when the quality of the wires is inconsistent.

The award-winning Actelis ML Ethernet Access Devices (EADs) can deliver up to 100 Mbps of Ethernet, TDM or ATM services over existing copper pairs, utilizing bonding to scale up capacity. Lab and field-proven, they can cost-effectively deliver more high-quality bandwidth to more locations than any other copper-based solution. By using the existing copper to deliver high-bandwidth services, government agencies can keep their capital expenditures to a minimum, while continuing to improve their community services.
