Transportation: Dynamic Message Signs

Dynamic message signs (DMS) that are constantly updated have been shown to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents, particularly on fast major highways. Drivers can be informed of accidents or congestion ahead on the roads they are on or nearby routes, giving them the option of changing course, and they can also be given be estimated journey times. However, given the number of such signs over a long distance highway, the whole system has to be reliable, quick to deploy, and easy to maintain.

For this reason the Actelis ML series of Ethernet Access Devices (EADs) is being extensively deployed for DMS networks, with a point-to-multipoint system in a control center distributing to point-to-point ML systems at each sign. This provides up to 5.7 Mbps over each copper pair, which is plenty for delivering high-resolution dynamic signs.
